Hi everyone.
We look forward to seeing you this Thurs. at Kaimuki from 3:15-4:15. This will be our first opportunity as a group to really take a breath, discuss what we took from Ua Pau, and brainstorm what we believe is important to share with our community about the experience. We hope the discussion that Kumu Kahua Artisitc Director Harry Wong led last week was useful in getting some insights about the story and, in general, how much thinking goes into turning a script into a performance. Who would have thought Madonna's Grammy-Award winning music video from 1998 was a commentary on the Bible?!? If you haven't already, please record a 1-2 min. reflection on Harry's presentation in your Anchor audio journal. If you're not sure where to start, consider this: What "behind-the-scenes" information about the play that he shared surprised you or just made you realize how much thought went into staging it. Or what was one bit of information about the play or about the theater in general he discussed that you had not considered much? Remember, the sooner you record your response after the experience, the more you'll have to share.
If your behind on our three audio journal recordings, or if you're having trouble sharing them, we'll take the first 10 mins. of our session this week to help each other catch up. The three we've worked on are:
1. What do you want to learn from this overall experience (after day 1) 2. First impressions of Ua Pau 3. How did Harry Wong's presentation help you understand the script? See you soon! By the way, here again are the instructions for creating and sharing your recordings:

Hi everyone! We hope you enjoyed Ua Pau, which as some of you suggested in your surveys, was full of emotion and hard to fully prepare for. If youʻre like me, whether you loved it or not, it made you think about our community and the challenges of life, love and family. On Thurs. this week, Harry Wong, who directed the play, will be coming to our session to help us analyze the script and explore the themes of the play. That should be a wonderful opportunity!
Before that, though, we would love to hear your first impressions while they're still fresh. On Anchor (the app we're using as an "audio journal" that you downloaded for our first session), please do your best to record and submit a 1-2 minute "first impressions" response. You might discuss whether you liked the play or not and why, if a particular character or scene spoke to you, and/or if it made you think about your life in some way. No special topic other than some of your honest first impressions. If you can complete this task by the end of the day of Tues., we would greatly appreciate it. See the directions for recording and sharing below that I first shared after our first session. (And if you haven't shared the recording you made after our first session at Kaimuki, please take a moment to do that as well.) Look forward to talking! alex and bill
Note: Doing it this way would make the process of collecting your audio journal files faster and smoother, but if you have trouble with Google Drive, just email me your file. You can do that by clicking "Export audio" and then choosing Gmail. Send the file to [email protected]. Hi everyone,
We look forward to seeing you at Kumu Kahua Theater tomorrow (Fri., 9/20) at 7:30 pm to watch Ua Pau, which in Hawaiian menas "Itʻs finished, destroyed." Hereʻs a brief article that describes Ua Pau and includes some useful background about the author and themes. Please take a few minutes to read it before the play. Keep in mind that sometime after the play, weʻll send you further information about recording a few quick responses, an easy process that shouldnʻt take more than about 20 mins. The purpose of these recordings is to share with our community what we're learning through this experience, and it's an important service you've been asked to provide! The play begins at 8 pm, but weʻre hoping to meet at the theater at 7:30 pm to say hello and take care of a little paperwork. Please do your best to be on time. Here are the directions and parking recommendations for Kumu Kahua. After the play, some of us plan to go to Zippy's on Vineyard for some snacks and conversation. We hope you can join us! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email or call Alex at (305) 982-7863. Looking forward to watching and talking with you, Alex Salinas-Nakanishi, Kapi'olani CC Bill Spradlin, Kaimuki HS Hi everyone,
Weʻre excited about our first play this week, Friday at 8 pm! We'll share some information on that in the next day or two, but first, we're hoping you would be willing to share the recordings you made at the end of last session. I wanted to point out that, as we discussed, our task is to share publicly what weʻre learning. It is important, though, that we do it in a way that you find comfortable. We really hope youʻre willing to share your recordings with a wider audience--it would make a big difference for the goals of our project--but thatʻs ultimately your choice, of course. You may choose to share in different ways (like presentations or written reflections). If you wish, you may want to record a "better" version of your initial impressions from last week (but itʻs ok with us if theyʻre informal and conversational). We want natural reflections that are also clear and interesting We donʻt want you to do more work than necessary. We want to stick to the little-to-no-hw policy for our fellowship. Please share your recording sometime this week by following these instructions.
We look forward to hearing your thoughts! Please donʻt hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Alex and Bill Dear Get Caught Up in the Drama! Fellows,
We want to welcome you to this exciting project that we hope provides a rich and fun learning experience. Weʻre grateful youʻre willing to lend your voice and to the discussions we hope to have to better understand and care for our community. As you know, our first meeting is this coming Thurs., 9/12 from 3:15-4:15 pm at Kaimuki HS. Weʻll take some time to get to know each other, establish some goals, and hopefully learn some background to go into our first play next week (on Fri., 9/20 at 8 pm) with a better sense of how best to appreciate that experience. A few points to keep in mind as we get ready:
